Step into the Mulvena Room and you’re embraced by rich, deep-red walls with subtle textured patterning that glow in the warm Central Otago sunlight streaming through the skylight. Named in honour of the Mulvena family, who purchased the still-unfinished castle in 1948 – complete with the dividing brick wall from the Spain brothers’ feud – this Central Otago farming family saw beyond the rabbit-ravaged past and revived the estate for agriculture and orcharding, turning a symbol of strife into a thriving working property and writing a hopeful new chapter.

The centerpiece is the magnificent antique king bed with its intricately carved dark-wood headboard and footboard accented in gleaming brass. The gentle glow of a brass chandelier and ornate white plaster ceiling are features, as well as a tall antique wooden wardrobe with mirrored doors.

With direct access to the southern deck, the room benefits from additional natural light and offering beautiful views towards The Coach House, the Stables and Alexandra beyond.

Wake to this gentle morning light dancing across the room and the knowledge that breakfast in the grand formal dining room – complete with house wine and canapes later – awaits just downstairs. This room feels like stepping into a warm, sun-drenched chapter of the castle’s story.
