This delightful classic room celebrates the Laidlaw connection with restored heritage details and a warm, homely atmosphere. Named in honour of James Laidlaw, the once-wealthy lessee who was overwhelmed by the devastating rabbit plague that decimated the station’s pastures in the late 19th century, forcing him to surrender the lease – a stark reminder of the environmental challenges faced by early Central Otago settlers.
Whilst this is our smallest room, it is beautifully appointed and feels like your own private corner of the historic castle. The centerpiece is the elegant queen bed with its richly carved dark-wood headboard and footboard featuring a diamond-patterned leather panel and gleaming brass accents.
Olive-green walls with subtle period patterning create a cosy, enveloping feel, while heavy floral curtains in cream, red and deep purple frame the large timber window, softening the light and adding warmth.
An open doorway leads directly to the southern deck and stairwell, flooding the room with additional natural light and offering beautiful views towards Alexandra. A beautifully restored antique marble-topped bedside table with an ornate crystal lamp sits beside the bed.
From morning breakfast in the grand dining room to evening canapes and house wine, every moment here connects you to the soul of Earnscleugh Castle.
