The Pool, Spa & Wellness Deck

Set against the majestic red-brick façade of Earnscleugh Castle, our heated swimming pool is a true highlight of the property. The generous light-toned timber deck wraps around the sparkling blue pool, offering plenty of space for lounging, shaded dining under large striped umbrellas, and relaxed gatherings.

Adjacent to the pool you’ll find a private hot tub, fire-pit area, and comfortable outdoor seating – all perfectly positioned for morning swims, afternoon sunbathing, or evening drinks under the stars.

With sweeping views across the gardens and distant mountains, this is where guests naturally come together to unwind, refresh and reconnect.

Sauna

Nestled beside the pool in its own private wellness pavilion, our Saunum Pro Experience sauna offers the ultimate in modern Finnish sauna luxury.

Crafted from beautiful light cedar, this high-end Saunum sauna features the brand’s signature gentle air circulation system, evenly heated benches and soft ambient lighting that creates a deeply relaxing atmosphere.

A spacious pre-sauna shower and a generous wooden bench provides the perfect transition, while the cedar-lined interior invites you to unwind on multiple tiers, absorbing the gentle, even heat.

Whether used after a day of riding the trails, as part of a corporate wellness session, or simply for pure relaxation, this is a true sanctuary of calm and rejuvenation.

Library

The soul of the castle, our magnificent Library is a warm, book-lined sanctuary that invites quiet reflection or lively conversation.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves crafted from recycled Rimu timber – salvaged from buildings damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes – line the walls, a poignant reminder of resilience and renewal. (Owner Ryan was living in Christchurch when the quakes struck, and this timber now forms a beautiful, personal link to that chapter of his life.)

Two deep brown leather wingback chairs sit companionably before a crackling fireplace, while a generous chesterfield sofa and antique desk create the perfect setting for reading, writing, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

High ornate ceilings, a sparkling chandelier, and tall windows with views across the gardens complete this timeless space – one of the most photographed and loved rooms in the castle.

The Grand Formal Dining Room

The Grand Formal Dining Room is the beating heart of Earnscleugh Castle’s hospitality. Dominating the space is the magnificent long oak dining table, hand-built in England in 1900 for the original owners of the Four-Square stores. With its rich, deep patina and masterful craftsmanship, this historic piece now seats up to 20 guests beneath two sparkling crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, golden light across the room.

Dramatic deep red walls are adorned with two striking large-scale artworks by New Zealand artist Liam Barr, complemented by ornate white plaster ceilings with intricate cornices and roses, and tall timber windows that frame views of the gardens. An elegant sideboard and a beautiful Persian-style rug complete the room’s timeless elegance.

Whether hosting a corporate long-table dinner, a private family celebration or an executive board dinner, this room offers an unforgettable backdrop for shared moments and memorable occasions.

Ballroom

Bathed in glorious morning light, the Sunroom – often referred to as the Ballroom – is one of the most joyful and versatile spaces in the castle. Vibrant golden walls, soaring white ornate ceilings with intricate cornices and roses, and two sparkling crystal chandeliers create a bright, uplifting atmosphere that feels both elegant and wonderfully welcoming.

Two sets of tall French doors open directly onto a large private eastern deck, flooding the room with glorious morning sun and offering beautiful views across the gardens. The Ballroom can be easily adapted and cleared for events and larger gatherings, while the adjacent deck is the perfect space for outdoor dining, allowing guests to flow seamlessly between indoor and outdoor areas.

A luxurious slate velvet sofa, a deep leather sofa, and a stunning Persian-style rug complete this versatile space – ideal for morning coffee, pre-dinner drinks, breakout sessions or simply soaking in the sunshine.

The Ballroom Kitchen (Caterer’s Kitchen)

Tucked discreetly off the Ballroom is our third kitchen – a bright, modern, and highly practical space designed to support seamless entertaining.

With stainless steel benchtops, a full suite of appliances, generous storage, and easy access to the Ballroom and eastern deck, this kitchen is ideal for caterers to prepare and serve canapes, drinks, or full meals without disrupting the main spaces.

It also functions perfectly as a breakfast prep area for house guests or a quiet coffee station during conferences. Clean white cabinetry and hexagonal flooring keep the aesthetic light and fresh while delivering everything needed for effortless hospitality.

The First Floor Landing (The Ship’s Bridge)

Perched proudly on the first floor, the Landing is one of the most unique and charming spaces in the castle. Designed by Stephen Spain himself to resemble the bridge of a grand ship, it is a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather, a high-ranking officer in the British Navy whom he greatly admired.

With its commanding views down the grand staircase that include another nautical nod – a porthole halfway down the landing – and across the gardens, wide timber “deck” flooring, brass details, and nautical-inspired layout, the space feels like a captain’s bridge transported into a historic manor. Comfortable seating invites you to pause, read, or simply sit and soak in the atmosphere — making it the perfect quiet retreat for morning coffee, afternoon reflection or a peaceful moment away from the world.

This delightful landing perfectly captures the visionary spirit of the castle’s builder and remains a favourite spot for guests to relax and connect with the home’s rich maritime heritage.

The Commercial Back-of-House Kitchen

Located at the rear of the castle, our spacious Commercial Back-of-House Kitchen mirrors the clean, modern design of the Sunroom Kitchen but on a significantly larger scale. This fully professional space is a favourite among private chefs, with generous stainless-steel work surfaces, high-capacity appliances and excellent workflow.

Direct access to the southern decks allows for efficient and effortless transfer of food, drinks and equipment throughout the entire castle — making it ideal for seamless in-house catering, large private dinners or full-house events.

Croquet Court

Set on the lush front lawn with the majestic red-brick castle as a stunning backdrop, our grass croquet court is perfect for friendly games and relaxed afternoons in the sun.

Shaded seating beneath our mature trees provides a comfortable spot to watch or rest, while we can bring over ice buckets filled with wine, beer or your favourite beverage to enhance the experience.
Lessons from the owners are happily provided on request, making it accessible and fun for all skill levels. We may even play you in a game or two if you so wish!

Whether for a casual game during a family stay or a team-building activity in a corporate retreat, the Croquet Court offers a timeless way to connect and enjoy the beautiful Central Otago outdoors.
