What is Earnscleugh Castle?

Why is the property protected under a Category 1 Heritage listing?

This prestigious protection recognises Earnscleugh Castle outstanding historical and architectural value, from its rare “Jacobethan” style, uncommon for a sheep station, to its role in Central Otago’s pastoral saga. As a cultural treasure tied to the region’s gold rush and economic challenges, it preserves a unique slice of New Zealand’s frontier legacy for future generations. It is currently being lovingly transformed into luxury accommodation for regional visitors.

Who owns Earnscleugh Castle now?

Ryan Sanders and Marco Creemers purchased the property in 2022. They’re passionately restoring this heritage icon while honouring its legacy, which has been filmed for a 2026 TV production. When restorations are complete, Earnscleugh Castle will provide historic accommodation suitable for family trips, weekend trips for couples and those seeking boutique Alexandra accommodation.

What TV production is filming the renovation?

We are unable to say but will release details as soon as we are allowed though we can say the show will be aired in 2026. We are extremely excited to share how we have transformed this beautiful piece of New Zealand heritage into premium Central Otago luxury accommodation.

When are the renovations due to be completed?

The internal renovations are due to be completed by the end of 2025.
